Down in Huntsville there’s a statue of Sam Houston. And it’s freaking huge. At 67 feet tall it’s the worlds largest statue of an American hero. We only do things big here in Texas.
I first saw the statue a couple of years ago when I went down to Houston with some friends to see Hayes Carll play at the Continental Club and to a sports convention. We were traveling down 45 and came around a corner and all of a sudden there it was. It looked as if he had just stepped out of the woods and was watching over the area. It was built by David Adickes in 1994. He had originally wanted to have it finished in 93 to celebrate Sam Houston’s 200th birthday but it ended up being a bigger project than he had anticipated.
This weekend I took a road trip with a friend down to Houston to see the Texas Rangers play the Houston Astros. Since we had left so early and had plenty of time before the game we stopped at the statue to take a few pictures.
All in all it’s a very amazing thing to see, especially when traveling north from Houston. There is also a visitors center and gift shop with all things Texas.
If you are ever in the area, please take the time to stop and visit the statue.
